Innovation in France

France is among the 10 most innovative countries in the world, according to 2016 Bloomberg’s ranking.

What are the factors that explain the dynamism of France in terms of innovation and creativity?

With a 300-year history of mathematical genius that spans from pioneers such as René Descartes and Pierre de Fermat to recentAbel Prize-winner Mikhail Gromov, France is the second-most-awarded country for mathematical excellence after the U.S.’ said Gilles André, CTO and co-founder at CustomerMatrix. “Combine that with the fact that France has long been a multilingual landscape (which has resulted in many initiatives in the areas of text mining and semantics), and you have the perfect environment to foster growth in the tech industry—especially in the IT sector.”

“Muriel Penicaud, CEO of Business France, the national agency supporting the international development of the French economy, explains that “innovation is a top priority for the country. It is sold as a “package” to French and international investors: excellent and affordable R&D and design workforce; a very rich eco-system, structured around dedicated clusters  and world-class research facilities, where companies can have access to the best resources, exchange ideas, co-develop to share the risks; an extremely favorable R&D tax credit system, regularly ranked top among OECD countries. US companies are more and more taking advantage of this with a rise of such investment projects implemented in France (12% of total US projects in France were R&D/design in 2015).”
